Kayakers Volunteer

Many kayakers volunteer around the world to help keep rivers pristine. Some even help to support other causes, such as disease in Africa. In this week's blog, check out the video below. American Whitewater is an organization in the United States that many boaters belong to which support the preservation of our rivers. Check out their site, click on the map of your area and look as some of the service projects they support, then answer the following questions for your project.

Questions:
1. What is the main goal of the project?
2. How are kayakers involved?
3. What river is involved?
4. What river statistics would be important for a kayaker?
5. Who is the USGS and how do they support this site?

Questions:
1.)The main goal of the project is to get people to see that kayaking and canoeing can be fun. This is for all ages.
2.)Kayakers are involved for safety and adventure. They can paddle donw river with everyone else, and also help young kayakers navigate through tough areas.
3.)Tyger River in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
4.)The water level, the cfs, the stage, and the class.
5.)A scientific agency of the United States that studies the landscape, natural resources, and natural hazards. They support the website by giving them the data, so kayakers and canoers can know information about the river, and have a safe and effective journey.

Questions
1. Getting information that will provide river managers with important information on how the river is used by whitewater paddlers.

2. They are not involved yet, but when it rains, many kayakers come out and kayak the incredilbe river.

3. Crooked River

4. a minimum acceptable flow of 1,400 cfs for both reaches with optimum flows for the Crooked River between 2,000 and 3,400 cfs. There are two whitewater stretches of the Crooked: the class IV (V) Upper Crooked, from Lone Pine Bridge to Crooked River Ranch and the class III (IV) Lower Crooked, from Crooked River Ranch to Billy Chinook Reservoir.

5. Its a stream flow data network for the rivers that is updated hourly. They help the website by giving kayakers information about rivers and there conditions so they know when to go out.

American Whitewater restores rivers dewatered by hydropower dams, eliminates water degradation, improves public land management and protects public access to rivers for responsible recreational use. Kayakers are involved by cleaning up litter along the riversides. One of the rives involved is the Nantahala River in Wesser, North Carolina. Some river statistics that are important for kayakers to know is the what the water level of the river is before you go on it. This is important because you need to know if it is feasible to kayak that section of the river. The USGS is the United States Geological Survey. Amerocan Whitewater is asking congress to process a bill for 70 million for the USGS Cooperative Water Program, and for full implementation of the National Streamflow Information Program.

The goal of the project is to clean up the Tuckasegee River by picking up trash along the shore or cleaning the actual river. Kayakers help clean up the river by pulling nets along behind their kayak or simply picking up trash floating in the river. The kayakers also help people on the rafts if any of the volunteers fall out. Section 3 of the Tuckasegee river is in North Carolina and is a class II(III). The minimum cfs is 1100 and the maximum cfs is 6000. A kayaker also needs to look out for floating debris in the water. Currently, the conditions of the river are stage 2.57 and flow of 1330. Section 3 of the Tuckasegee is about 5 miles long. The USGS is the national water information center. The USGS provides the information and statistics about the rivers for the American Whitewater website.

The Kayak trip I chose was the Nantahala Falls Open. It is an event for all kayakers of all skill levels. They will compete in different challenges for money prizes. Some important river statistics are the water height, the cfs's, the the part of the river that they are travelling, and the difficulty of the river that is being kayaked. USGS is a company that updates all of the information that a kayaker or a rafter would need before he begins his journey. They tell the depth and other water conditions of the different rivers around the country.

The goal of this project is to clean up the Tuckasegee River by picking up trash in and out of the river. The kayakers help people on the rafts if anyone fallsout. Now the conditions of the river are stage 2.57 and flow of 1330. Section three of the Tuckasegee is five miles long. Section three of the Tuckasegee river is in North Carolina and is a class II. The minimum cfs is 1100 and the maximum cfs is 6000. Cfs is the cubic feet per second at which the water flows. The USGS is the scientific national water information center which provides the statistics for the American Whitewater website.

The main goal of the project at Elk Creek is to remove the unfinished dam so the river can be restored to its original flow. Kayakers are involved because currently the dam impeades the main channel of the river making it un-passable. The Elk Creek which drains into the Rouge River. The CFS because the increased/decreased flow of a river can change the rapids and make the river run completely different. The United States Geological Survey takes all of the water data which is supplied on americanwhitewater.com for the kayakers.

The main goal of the project is to get people to see that kayaking and canoeing can be just enjoyable as playing other sports such as football or basketball. Which can be played by all ages.
2
Kayakers are involved mainly for safety purposes. They can paddle donw river and navigate through tough places.
3
Tuckasegee river in North Carolina
4
The water level, the cfs, the stage, and the class.

The scientific agency of the United States supports the website by giving them data that help kayakers about rivers and there conditions so they know when is a good time go kakaying.

1. It gives the river managers information like how the river is being used by whitewater paddlers.
2. The river is too low right now for the kayakers, but when it starts to rain and the drought ends, more people will go on the river.
3. Crooked River
4. It needs a minimum acceptable flow of 1,400 cfs for both reaches with high flows between 2,000 and 3,400 cfs. The two whitewater sections of the Crooked River are the class IV (V) Upper Crooked, from Lone Pine Bridge to Crooked River Ranch and the class III (IV) Lower Crooked, from Crooked River Ranch to Billy Chinook Reservoir.
5. The USGS gives American Whitewater its water statitistics it has on its pages everyday.

The Goal for this project is to be non-profit organization that provides free kayak lessons to underprivileged children. Kayakers are the ones setting up the initial fundraising day where all the money donated will be given to clinics and research efforts to help these children. They will also be teaching the kids. A river that could be used is the Nantahala River in Georgia. This river is known for being one of the safer rivers to run on. Some River statistics that would be important for this group would be to know the length of the river, which is 8 miles long and it is a class II – III level of expertise, a good kayak for beginners. Kayakers would also need to know when the power generation is being run because that adds difficulty in the water with choppy and tall water flow. The USGS mission is to provide water information that benefits the Nation's citizens: Publications, data, maps, and applications software. USGS Water-Resources offices are located in every State.

1) The main goal of the project is to get people, mainly the younger crowd, involved in kayaking and canoing.
2) For the safety factor. In order to have fun, you must first and foremost be safe.
3) A river called Tyger River in South Carolina.
4) The class of the river, so one would know if he/she could handle it. The water level, so one could know if the river could handle him/her.
5) It is an American organization that tracks important statistics such as listed in number 4. This helps kayakers to know when it is safe to go out.

1) The purpose is to improve recreational activities on the river and whitewaater resources.
2) AW workers spent hours working on proposals and ideas to advance the project they were working on. They went over maps on the river.
3) The AW was working on the Tucksagee River.
4)The kayakers would have to know how fast the river flowed and in what direction. They would also have to know whether the amount of rainfall received affects the flow of the river.
5) The USGS is the United States geological survey. They study the geologic, hydrolic and topographic features of the earth. The USGS shows the amount of water coolected before and after a rainfall, and the rise and fall of thee water.
